The 2019 Mazda CX-5 SkyActiv-D will mark the brand's first-ever diesel crossover when it arrives in Canada next month with an asking price of $45,950.
Mazda is offering its 2.2L turbodiesel exclusively in the CX-5's Signature trim in a bid to steal attention from today's "current crop of premium diesel SUVs." The new oil-burner makes 168 and 290 lb-ft torque, with estimated fuel consumption of 8.9/7.9 L/100 km (city/highway), matching the estimates for the Signature's standard 2.5L turbo gas engine and its 250 hp/310 lb-ft.
The CX-5 diesel's MSRP makes the new engine a $5,000 step up from the Signature trim with the existing turbo 2.5L gas motor. The CX-5 SkyActiv-D will also include the Signature's Nappa leather upholstery, Abachi wood trim, and satin chrome accents, among that trim's many other standard features. Mazda is also including complimentary scheduled maintenance for two years/32,000 km with the purchase of a diesel CX-5.
Land Rover sells a diesel in its Range Rover models, but those start with the $80,000-plus Range Rover Sport.
It might be easier to talk about the diesel crossovers that have been recently cropped out of the picture. Mercedes-Benz and BMW no longer offer their GLC-Class and X3 compact utilities with diesel power, and just last week General Motors last week dropped a diesel option from its Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain compact crossovers due to slow sales.
For its part, Mazda Canada says it's not targeting any specific models with the CX-5 diesel. Instead, the manufacturer says the diesel option "allows us to put our best foot forward to appeal to customers shopping for a diesel SUV in the premium segment."
