All the Manual Transmission Cars on Sale in Canada: 2019

The manual transmission may be falling out of favour in North America at a rapid rate, but there are still many vehicles on sale today that offer them.

Furthermore, there are many different types of vehicles still available with manuals, from sports cars to crossovers and even pickup trucks. Whether you want a manual transmission car because it’s more affordable or you want one because you think it’s more fun, there are many options for you.

Scroll down to view (by alphabetical order) the admittedly very long list of cars, crossovers, and trucks on sale in Canada that still offer three pedals and a stick.

BMW

BMW 2 Series

BMW’s familiar two-door can be ordered with a six-speed manual transmission in both 230i and M240i trim, staying true to the automaker’s “Ultimate Driving Machine” slogan.

BMW 4 Series

The current BMW 4 Series’ time on this planet will likely come to an end soon, with BMW set to replace it with a new model based on the 2020 BMW 3 Series. For now, though, the 4 Series still offers a six-speed manual on 440i and M4 versions of the coupe.

Chevrolet

Chevrolet Camaro

The Camaro goes all-in on the manual transmission, offering it on 2.0-litre, 3.6-litre V6, and 6.2-litre V8 versions of the muscle car. The range-topping Camaro ZL1 can also be ordered with a manual, unlike the new Ford Shelby Mustang GT500.

Chevrolet Sonic

The Chevrolet Sonic could be on its way out shortly, with GM cutting many sedans and hatchbacks from its lineup, but the subcompact car is still kicking for now and is still offering a six-speed manual as its base transmission.

Chevrolet Spark

Chevy’s cheap hatch has a six-speed manual as its base transmission, outdoing its segment rivals the Micra and the Mirage, which have only five-speed manuals on offer.

Chevrolet Trax

Chevy’s aging compact crossover can be ordered with a six-speed manual in Canada – but only if you opt for a front-wheel-drive LS base model.

Dodge

Dodge Challenger

The V8 versions of the Dodge Challenger are offered with a six-speed manual – including the 707 horsepower Challenger Hellcat. Timid drivers need not apply!

Fiat

Fiat 124 Spider

The Fiat 124 Spider is based on the Mazda MX-5, but its six-speed manual transmission is actually the manual from the old NC-generation Mazda MX-5. Just like most cars on this list, though, it’s still great fun to drive.

Fiat 500

Italy loves its manual cars, so it should be no surprise that the tiny Fiat 500 still has a six-speed manual as its base transmission. The performance-focussed 500 Abarth model also has a six-speed manual as standard.

Ford

Ford Mustang

The Ford Mustang has a standard six-speed manual transmission in both 2.3-litre four-cylinder and 5.0-litre V8 guise. If you really like performance, the 5.2-litre V8 powered Shelby GT350 is also offered with a six-speed manual.

Genesis

Genesis G70

The Genesis G70 needed to offer a six-speed manual if it truly wanted to position itself as an alternative to the BMW 3 Series. Only the Sport trim with the 2.0-litre turbocharged engine is offered with it, though.

Honda

Honda Accord

It’s hard not to like Honda for offering a six-speed manual in its venerable mid-size sedan, the Accord. The Japanese automaker also offers a three-pedal gearbox with both the 1.5-litre and 2.0-litre four-cylinder engines in the Honda Accord Sport, giving buyers even more choice. Thanks again, Honda!

Honda Civic

The Honda Civic has been a go-to fun budget car for millions of Canadians for quite some time. To help keep it both affordable and fun, Honda offers a manual transmission on the Civic across the board, including on the Si and the high-performance Type R, both of which don’t even have an automatic option.

Honda Fit

The Honda Fit is a solid, inexpensive car that is surprisingly fun to drive. It has a standard six-speed manual on the DX, LX, and Sport trims. The range-topping LX with Honda Sensing has a CVT due to its standard active safety features.

Hyundai

Hyundai Accent

The Hyundai Accent’s six-speed manual base transmission is offered with both four- and five-door versions of the vehicle and is available in multiple trim levels, too.

Hyundai Elantra/Elantra GT

The Elantra sedan and Elantra GT hatchback both have a six-speed manual transmission as standard transmission. We suggest pairing the manual with the new sport-inspired Elantra GT N-Line.

Hyundai Veloster

The Hyundai Veloster has a six-speed manual on offer in all trim levels – including the high-performance Veloster N.

Jeep

Jeep Wrangler

The boxy and off-road capable Jeep Wrangler SUV is already in a class of its own with no real competition, but it’s made even more unique by its standard six-speed manual transmission available on all trim levels.

Jeep Gladiator

The Jeep Gladiator, essentially a pickup-truck version of the Wrangler, has a six-speed manual as standard on all of its trims.

Jeep Compass

Little known fact: If you opt for a front-wheel-drive Jeep Compass in base level Sport trim, you can also select a six-speed manual. The more you know!

Kia

Kia Forte

Kia’s attractive compact sedan, the Forte, is designed to look like a mini Kia Stinger, the brand’s well-received sport sedan. The Forte is actually better than the Stinger in one key area though: it is offered with a standard manual transmission. Which is the real sport sedan, Kia?

Kia Rio

Kia’s familiar hatchback, the Rio, still has a six-speed manual as its base transmission in the modestly equipped LX and LX+ models.

Mazda

Mazda3

The base transmission in the Mazda3 is a six-speed manual – fitting in a car that is as fun-to-drive as this Japanese compact car, which comes as both a sedan and a hatchback. Mazda prides itself on making engaging cars, and having a manual transmission is a big part of that equation.

Mazda MX-5

The Mazda MX-5 (aka Miata) is nothing without the manual transmission. This fun-to-drive sports car offers a slick-shifting six-speed manual as standard and is probably one of the few cars on sale still where the manual remains a popular choice.

Mini

Mini Cooper

The Mini Cooper’s base six-speed manual transmission is available across the board in the car including thee-door and five-door models and on the high-performance Mini JCW. The manual transmission in the Mini Cooper is excellent and is easy to use even if you’re a novice to driving stick – even in the base model, the manuals come with automatic rev-matching and a hill holder so you won’t roll backwards.

Mini Clubman All4

Just like the Cooper, the Clubman All4 has a base six-speed manual transmission available across the board.

Mini Countryman

The same is true for the Mini Countryman, which offers a six-speed manual as the base transmission despite being a crossover.

Mitsubishi

Mitsubishi Mirage

The Mitsubishi Mirage offers a five-speed manual transmission on certain lower trim levels in its quest to try to be as affordable as possible.

Nissan

Nissan 370Z

The aging, rear-wheel-drive Nissan 370Z soldiers on and a sports car like this wouldn’t be much fun without a standard six-speed manual.

Nissan Frontier

The Nissan Frontier joins the Tacoma in offering a manual in the mid-size truck segment, however, the six-speed manual is only available with the off-road-focused Pro-4X trim level.

Nissan Micra

The Nissan Micra was designed for affordability and, as such, it has a no-frills five-speed manual as the base transmission. Three cheers for simplicity!

Nissan Sentra

The Nissan Sentra is an older vehicle, so it’s no surprise that it still has a six-speed manual as standard, including on the sporty(ish) Sentra Nismo.

Nissan Qashqai

The Nissan Qashqai is an oddball in that it offers a manual transmission, which is a rarity with crossovers. The six-speed is the base transmission on the entry-level Qashqai S with front-wheel drive only.

Porsche

Porsche 911

Porsche’s quick-shifting automatic gearboxes are some of the best in the business, but the 911 is still a car that is well-suited to the manual transmission. Luckily the 991-generation Porsche 911 introduced for 2020 holds onto the automaker’s seven-speed manual.

Porsche 718 Boxster and Cayman

A small, spritely sports car like the Porsche 718 obviously has to have a manual offered. The 2019 model year 718 still has a six-speed manual as its standard transmission, while the Cayman GT4 can only be ordered with three pedals.

Subaru

Subaru BRZ

The Subaru BRZ was built for driving and having fun in, so a manual is a necessity in this car. It has a six-speed manual as the base transmission and if you opt for the automatic in this car, you will definitely be missing out.

Subaru Impreza

The Subaru Impreza is the only hatchback on the market that pairs all-wheel drive with a six-speed manual. All hail Subaru!

Subaru WRX/WRX STI

The rally-inspired WRX and WRX STI also have a six-speed manual as their base transmissions and we are hoping that won’t change when the next-generation model is introduced shortly.

Subaru Crosstrek

Essentially a crossover version of the Impreza, the Crosstrek’s base transmission is a six-speed manual as well.

Toyota

Toyota 86

The Subaru BRZ’s twin, the Toyota 86, has the same six-speed manual and is just as fun to drive. Not surprisingly.

Toyota Corolla

Toyota took a chance by continuing to offer the Corolla with a six-speed manual, but we’re happy they did. It’s also available on a number of different trims and on both the sedan and hatchback.

Toyota Tacoma

With neither the Ford Ranger nor the Chevrolet Colorado offering a manual, you have to hand it to Toyota for continuing to offer it on multiple versions of the Tacoma. There aren’t many trucks that offer a manual these days.

Toyota Yaris

Like other budget offerings on this list, the Yaris is offered with a five-speed manual as standard in both sedan and hatchback variants.

Volkswagen

Volkswagen Golf

The Volkswagen Golf is another car that wouldn’t be much without the manual transmission. The regular Golf, along with the GTI and high-performance R versions, can all still be ordered with a six-speed manual.

Volkswagen Jetta

The new 2019 Volkswagen Jetta retains a six-speed manual transmission as the entry-level transmission, despite most buyers opting for the automatic.
