Lego has revealed a brick-by-brick recreation of the just-launched Land Rover Defender that is the latest in its line of Technic kits.
Lego teamed up with the British manufacturer to create the 2,573-piece version of the three-door Defender 90, which got its debut alongside the real deal at this week's Frankfurt auto show.
Like Lego's other Technic kits, this one gets, well, pretty technical. There's an in-line six-cylinder engine with moving pistons that apes the new car's available mild-hybrid motor, and Lego says a transmission with high- and low-range gearing is the most sophisticated gearbox it has ever built. Folding the rear seat forward reveals the four-speed transmission, turning the spare tire opens the rear door and, naturally, the front doors swing open for access to the cabin.
The Lego kit arguably pays more homage to the original Defender than Land Rover's modern design, as the toy company's bricks sharpen some of the production car's rounded edges. Still, Lego has worked the new model's ring-shaped daytime running lights, square marker lights, and front fascia elements into its design. There's even a tiny winch hook peeking out of the front bumper.
Lego says the Defender Technic kit goes on sale in Canada on October 1 for $249.99.
