The head of Cadillac says that the brand is going back to using real names instead of alphanumerics and that it could go entirely electric by 2030.
Cadillac is going to lead GM's electrification plan, something Cadillac President Steve Carlisle has said before, but now he's saying that the majority or even all of the brand's offerings could be electric or electrified by the end of the next decade.
"We're entering the decade as an internal-combustion-engine brand," Carlisle told Automotive News. "We'll exit the decade as a battery-electric brand. It's the end of the ICE age for Cadillac."
The first fully electric Cadillac is expected to arrive in 2021, as GM expands its portfolio of electrified offerings. Carlisle confirmed that the brand would be offering an EV in the form of a large SUV like the Escalade, which Reuters says is expected to start production in 2023.
With those new vehicles will come real names. Cadillac is just finishing up its transition to its latest alphanumeric naming system, but over the next decade that will be undone. These include names like CT6 or XT4. "The rollout of the electric vehicles is the time we'll start to move back toward naming," Carlisle said, pointing out that the brand has some great names to use, like Escalade, which is the one remaining nameplate the brand is currently using.
