Last year, Volkswagen Canada confirmed the automaker would launch its first electric crossover in 2021. The vehicle will be the first VW to be sold under the automaker's ID sub-brand in Canada and is expected to be heavily influenced by the VW ID Crozz concept.
Now, autoTRADER.ca has discovered trademark applications that could provide even more insight into the future of the VW ID product lineup both in Canada and internationally. The trademarks include the ID.4 X, ID.5 X and ID. 6 X names, all of which were filed under a classification reserved for "motorized vehicles." They were also filed with the World Intellectual Property Organization and not a specific country's intellectual property office, so these names could be destined for use in a large variety of markets.
Interestingly, VW previously filed to reserve the ID.3, ID.4 and ID.5 nameplates in 2019 - but without the 'X' on the end. This leaves us wondering what the addition of the 'X' could mean. The most obvious guess is that it will be used to differentiate vehicles with all-wheel drive, as other automakers have done this in the past (i.e. Saab 9-3 and Saab 9-3 X).
The electric crossover VW Canada will launch in 2021 is expected to wear the ID.4 badge. If our predictions in this article prove accurate, we imagine the base, two-wheel drive ID.4 will be called as such, while dual-motor all-wheel drive version will be called ID.4X.
