Porsche Bolsters 718 Boxster and Cayman Lineup with New GTS Variant

Porsche revealed Cayman and Boxster GTS 4.0 variants as the latest members of the brand's 718 sports car lineup.

Building on last year's GTS models, the new additions slot in below the Cayman GT4 and Boxster Spyder, using a slightly less potent version of the naturally aspirated six-cylinder found in those range-topping variants to replace their predecessors' 2.5L turbo four-cylinder engine.

Cayman and Boxster GTS 4.0 share a 4.5-second 0-100 km/h acceleration time and a 293-km/h top speed, giving up 0.1 seconds to the Cayman GT4 and Boxster Spyder, and about 10 km/h in top speed.

Porsche says the GTS 4.0 cars come exclusively with a six-speed manual transmission and a sport exhaust, which it claims contribute to a "particularly rewarding driving experience."

The GTS 4.0 models also sport a 20-mm lower ride height compared to the standard 718 models thanks to a sport suspension with the Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) system. Also included are torque vectoring, a mechanical limited slip differential, and the Sport Chrono package with Porsche's track precision app.

Porsche says the Boxster and Cayman GTS 4.0 also get better brakes than last year's GTS, with larger rotors and six-piston front calipers.

Other standard kit includes 20-inch light-alloy wheels and a black Alcantara interior with carbon fibre trim. An optional GTS interior package adds the choice of red or chalk-coloured accents for stitching, seat embroidery and tachometer.

While Porsche focuses on the six-cylinder engine's performance benefits, the 4.0L also includes some concessions to fuel economy, like a cylinder control system that shuts off one of the cylinder banks under light loads to save fuel.

The 2020 Porsche 718 Cayman and 718 Boxster GTS 4.0 models will arrive in Canada this summer, with pricing to be announced closer to that time.
