Chevrolet has just revealed a facelift for the Equinox compact crossover, and to go with the new look, it's offering a new RS trim. Chevrolet also says the CUV gets some new safety gear as the company works to make sure that the top-selling General Motors vehicle that's not a full-size truck stays fresh.
The new nose shrinks and bisects the headlights, putting the accent light up top and the actual lamp in a much smaller pod below the grille line that now runs from fender to fender. The more prominent grille divide also shrinks the top half of the grille and elongates the bottom. The bumper itself is re-sculptured, as are the fog light surrounds. The taillights are similarly restyled, with an LED arrow appearance. The bottom of the rear bumper gains a body-colour painted accent, at least on RS trims, accompanied by a pair of twin tailpipes.
New for 2021 is the RS trim, a popular option on the Traverse as well as some of Chevrolet's previous sedan offerings. RS adds the gloss black grille you see in the photos along with an RS badge in the mesh. There are black Chevrolet bow tie logos, black badges, and black roof rails, plus 19-inch Dark Android wheels. Inside, RS offers black leather with red accent stitching throughout the cabin and a special RS shifter.
Premier, the top Equinox trim, also sees some upgrades including a new 19-inch wheel, LED head and taillights, a gloss black grille with chrome inserts, and French stitching inside with piano black trim on the console.
Automatic parking assist is new to the options list, and Chevrolet says that its safety and driver assistance features will be available on more trims than they are currently. We'll have to wait to find out exactly how they're planning the reshuffle.
Powertrains are the same, with either a 1.5L turbo four-cylinder making 170 hp or a 252 hp 2.0L turbo. The smaller engine gets a six-speed auto, the larger a nine, and AWD is available across the line.
Chevrolet's CAMI plant in Ingersoll, ON, is set to start building the 2021 Equinox in early May.
