Ford Says Mustang Mach-E Charging Times Are 30% Faster Now

The 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E hasn’t arrived yet, but the American automaker has already announced that the electric vehicle’s charging times are 30 per cent faster than originally forecast.

Ford says drivers should be able to add 97 kilometres of range to an extended range and rear-wheel-drive Mach-E model in just 10 minutes using a 150 kWh DC fast charging station. The original estimate was 75 km of range under the same circumstances.

The all-wheel-drive Mustang Mach-E with the extended range battery can add 84 km in 10 minutes, meaning both RWD and AWD versions can get from 10 per cent to 80 per cent charge in about 45 minutes using a Level 3 fast charger.

The standard battery option is no charging slouch either and is able to add 73 km in 10 minutes for the rear-wheel-drive model, and 67 km with the AWD version, going from 10 per cent to 80 per cent in about 38 minutes on a fast charger.

The 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E’s base model will come with about 325 to 355 km of range, while the upgraded extended range battery offers up to 425 km. So far, most pre-orders have been for the extended range models and AWD.

The extended range, AWD Mach-E is rated at 332 hp and 417 lb-ft of torque, while a GT version will output 459 hp and 612 lb-ft, which is projected to give it a sub-three-second sprint to 100 km/h.

Ford also announced that it has expanded its FordPass charging network with its partners so that Mach-E drivers will have access to 13,500 charging stations and almost 40,000 charging plugs in North America. Ford says the first two years of access to the FordPass charging network are free. The chargers aren't owned by Ford, but FordPass allows drivers to pay and connect with one app instead of signing up for multiple charging services, which makes charging much more convenient.

The 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E is expected to arrive in late 2020 with pricing as follows:

  • Select: $50,495
  • Premium: $59,495
  • First Edition: $71,995
