A year after its return to the market following an 18-year absence, the 2021 Toyota Supra is adding a four-cylinder variant that’s priced to sell.
Previously offered only in Europe and Japan, the 2.0L turbo engine makes 255 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. But those aren’t the numbers that matter. Instead, it’s the price tag that’s more enticing, with the four-cylinder version starting at $56,390 – over $8,000 less than the cheapest 2020 Supra that was only offered with a six-cylinder under the hood.
To widen the gap between the two motors, Toyota added more power to the straight-six-cylinder the Supra launched with. The turbocharged 3.0L engine now makes 382 hp and 368 lb-ft of torque, up from 335 hp and 365 lb-ft of torque. The six-cylinder’s torque curve also changes slightly, kicking in at 1,800 rpm and lasting through 5,000 rpm. The 2020 model’s torque curve spanned from 1,600–4,500 rpm.
Either way, the Supra’s only offered with one transmission: an eight-speed automatic. It gets launch control no matter the engine, though only 3.0L models get an electronic locking rear differential. According to Toyota, the sprint to 60 mph takes just 3.9 seconds for the 3.0L version compared to 5.0 seconds for the 2.0L.
Still, the Supra’s starting price is still significantly more than the Toyota 86, which rings in at about $35,000 before freight and fees for one fitted with an automatic transmission (the cheapest manual model is $30,150). The six-cylinder Supra, meanwhile, gets a hefty price bump. It starts at $67,690 and adds features like adaptive dampers, a 12-speaker stereo, and a head-up display.
Given Toyota sold just 252 examples of the Supra in Canada last year, it’s surely hoping this new entry-level model will drum up some hype.
