The 2021 Mazda3 sedan and hatchback will now be available with a turbocharged 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine that outputs 250 horsepower and 320 pound-feet of torque.
Although those figures can only be achieved using 93-octane gas, the new Mazda3 Turbo has higher output than the Volkswagen Golf GTI’s 228 hp and 258 lb-ft. It’s not the full Mazdaspeed3 hot hatch that some enthusiasts were hoping for, the new turbo offering addresses some complaints that the 3 was not fast enough.
Officially, the new engine is called the Skyactiv-G 2.5T and will output 227 hp and 310 lb-ft on regular 87-octane fuel, still pretty good ratings for the segment. Mazda will only be offering the turbo engine on all-wheel-drive versions of the compact car, which makes it unique in its segment. Drivers will still be able to get the naturally aspirated 2.0L model or the 2.5L engine with all-wheel drive.
The Mazda3 GT Turbo models get more standard features including a leather-wrapped heated steering wheel, leather seats, moonroof, 10-way adjustable driver seat with memory, and the Japanese brand’s full suite of driver assistance and safety technology that includes full-speed adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, adaptive front lighting, lane keep assist, and more. Turbo models get exclusive larger tailpipes, 18-inch black wheels, and black trim accents. Automatic front and rear emergency braking, traffic jam assist, and 360-degree parking camera are also available on top trim models with the Premium Package.
Mazda is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year and will be offering special edition models of the Mazda3 that will be powered exclusively by this new turbo engine.
The 2021 Mazda3 Turbo will be available late this year with pricing starting at $32,900 for the Mazda3 GT Turbo AWD sedan and $33,900 for the hatchback, $34,600 for the Mazda3 GT Turbo AWD sedan with Premium Package and $35,600 for the hatchback, and $36,100 for the Mazda3 100th Anniversary Edition AWD Turbo sedan and $37,100 for the hatchback.
