Following the release of its electric snowmobiles, and Founders Edition electric-powered personal watercraft last year, Montreal-based Taiga Motors recently unveiled three new electric PWC models.
The original unit featured a 23 kWh battery pack at an MSRP of $24,000 USD. Boasting 120 hp and weighing 242 kg (533 lb), the Orca Sport model starts at $15,000 USD. Offering up to 180 hp, the 267 kg (588 lb) Orca Performance model starts at $17,500 USD with the option of a three-person tow sport package. Three colours are available: White, Blue and Red.
A third model, the Carbon, features the same dimensions, 25 kWh battery, 60 km range (at 45 km/h)) and 104 km/h (65 mph) top speed as the Performance model, but offers the options of customizable body panels, seat configurations and deck mats. Its Carbon fiber construction allows a lower weight of 258 kg (570 lb). Pricing starts at $24,000 USD.
While admittedly more expensive to purchase than their gas-powered competition, Taiga’s PWCs offer instant low-end torque, zero emissions, and less maintenance (Taiga claims zero) than a traditional PWC.
The new Orca Sport and Performance models feature lightweight plastic composite hull construction and the same RADIX powertrain platform found in their TS3 electric sleds, mated to a 20 and 25 kWh battery respectively. Taiga claims that this combination provides a leading power-to-weight ratio, allowing their watercraft to accelerate to plane faster than any other PWC.
Without an internal combustion engine, their whisper quiet operation is also less likely to tick off your neighbours. The Orca emits up to 20 times less noise than competing combustion PWCs at full throttle. Accidental fuel spills won’t be an issue, and neither will oil changes or winterization. Taiga claims that the closed loop liquid cooling system doesn’t require flushing or maintenance. Taiga also claims that the absence of upkeep and fuel alone will provide a $3,000 savings over five years of ownership.
The Orca lineup features brake and reverse functions, as well as three riding modes - Normal, Eco and Sport. The 7-inch HD colour screen provides information on battery range, motor and battery temp, as well as a clock, tachometer and speedometer. Riding time is estimated to be two hours, but is impacted by riding behaviour and mode selected. Charging times also vary depending on application but up to 80 per cent charge can be reached in 20 minutes with a DC fast charger.
Online pre-orders can be secured now with a $100 USD deposit. Deliveries to Taiga dealers are expected to begin next summer. Canadian pricing to be announced at a later date.
