GMC today revealed a few details of its refreshed 2022 Terrain compact crossover, which will get its first-ever AT4 trim with mild off-road enhancements and more upscale kit for the posh Denali package.
The 2022 update brings revised styling to all Terrain trims in the form of a new grille and larger C-shaped LED headlights, along with new LED taillights and lower rear fascia (although, curiously, GMC provided no photos of the new Terrain’s rear view).
GMC says the new Terrain AT4 completes the brand’s rollout of its off-road-focused trim package, which was already available on its five other pickup truck, SUV, and crossover models.
GMC says its updated small SUV was originally set to arrive as a 2021 model but, like so many things, was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Based on what the AT4 group adds to the Acadia mid-size crossover, we were expecting the Terrain to gain more off-road functionality, but it ended up being largely a cosmetic exercise: a steel front skid plate and grippier tires are the only nods to actually boosting the Terrain’s ability to survive a romp through the rough stuff. By comparison, the Toyota RAV4 Trail – another compact crossover that projects off-road intentions – promises more utility with extra towing capacity and ground clearance.
The 2022 GMC Terrain Denali gets a new standard head-up display (it will be optional in other trims) and an 8-inch digital gauge cluster display.
There’s new tech for non-Denali versions of the 2022 GMC Terrain, too, in the form of wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration, and Amazon Alexa capabilities. Every Terrain buyer will also get a full suite of active driver safety assists: forward collision warning with pedestrian detection and automatic braking, lane keep assist, lane departure warning, following distance indicator, and automatic high beam headlights.
Sometime last year, GMC deleted the Terrain’s optional 2.0L turbo engine, leaving a 1.5L turbo four-cylinder (170 hp/203 lb-ft of torque) as the only motor on offer. As before, it will come bolted to a nine-speed transmission with standard front-wheel drive with optional all-wheel drive.
The 2022 GMC Terrain will arrive in Canada starting this summer in SLE, SLT and AT4 forms. The Terrain Denali will follow in the fall. GMC says it will reveal pricing closer to those launch dates.
