GMC Reveals Hummer EV SUV

GMC has just revealed the latest addition to the Hummer EV family. The Hummer EV SUV uses the same Ultium platform as the pickup and gets the same rugged styling, but trades the bed for a large enclosed space to keep your cargo warm and dry.  Super Cruise, GM's advanced hands-free driver assistance system, will be standard. The launch begins with a new ad narrated by LeBron James, and it will give us some info about the new model. Meanwhile, GMC Canada has filled us in on some of the rest.

Though full dimensions weren't given, GMC said that the Hummer EV SUV will have a 3,218-mm (126.7-inch) wheelbase, and though it doesn't look like it from the photos, that figure is 227 mm (8.9 inches) shorter than the pickup. Based on that, we expect the overall length to change as well. The shorter wheelbase helps manoeuvrability, shortening the turning circle by about a metre on models equipped with four-wheel steering.

Like the pickup, GMC says the Hummer SUV will get a standard glass roof and will have removable sky panels and brackets as well as opening rear glass. Every Hummer EV SUV will get the latest Enhanced Super Cruise as standard, GM's hands-free driver assistance system that can steer, accelerate, and brake in most highway conditions as well as handling automatic lane changes.

Five versions will be available, with the Edition 1 arriving first. That one gets a 20-module battery and three electric motors to offer 830 hp and the confusing 11,500 lb-ft torque figure. That torque figure isn't comparable to other EVs and gas engine vehicles because of the way it's measured. The Edition 1 offers 482 km of estimated range. Also offered on Edition 1 (and 2X and 3X) is an Extreme Off-Road package with 18-inch wheels, 35-inch mud-terrain tires, underbody protection and rock slider, front electronic and rear virtual locking differentials, heavier axles, and underbody camera views. GMC says it should have "best-in-class off-road proportions," though we're waiting for the full spec sheet.

Below Edition 1 models sit the Hummer EV2 SUV, EV2X, and EV3X. Like with the pickup, the base gets 625 hp from two motors, a 16-module 402-km battery, and 400V charging. 2X has a 482-km range estimate from adding the larger 20-module battery and the 3X gets three motors and the big battery offering similar figures to the Edition 1.

Hummer EV SUV will come with many of the same new off-road features as the pickup including CrabWalk diagonal-movement steering and Extract Mode rising suspension. It will have five seats and will offer a rear-mounted full-size spare tire.

The Hummer EV SUV Edition 1 will arrive in early 2023, with 2X and 3X in the spring of that year and the base model in the spring of 2024.
