The Canadian electric vehicle market just got a whole lot more opulent with the debut of the luxurious 2022 Mercedes-Benz EQS 580 4Matic sedan.
The EQS 580 4Matic is the German luxury brand’s first production battery-powered vehicle based on a dedicated EV platform. It comes with a 107.8 kWh lithium ion battery and a dual-motor all-wheel drive powertrain producing 385 kW of power, equivalent to roughly 516 horsepower. This setup is good for a maximum estimated range of 700 kilometres on the (typically quite generous) European WLTP testing cycle. Mercedes claims the EQS 580 4Matic will be able to accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in about 4.3 seconds and will top out at 210 km/h.
As far as charging is concerned, the EQS 580 4Matic is capable of charging at a rate of up to 200 kW at a DC fast charging station, which will fill the battery with 300 km of WLTP range in just 15 minutes. A 9.6 kW onboard charger enables quick and easy charging at a home wall charger or at less powerful public charging stalls.
Described as a close relative of the well-established Mercedes-Benz S-Class, the EQS is quite large at 5,246 mm in length, which actually makes it longer than the standard wheelbase S-Class. Mercedes says the EQS is still highly manoeuvrable thanks to its standard rear axle steering system, however, which enables a tight turning circle of 10.9 metres – comparable to some compact sedans. The EQS will also be the first Mercedes product capable of using over-the-air updates to change and/or improve its driving dynamics, battery management system, and other critical aspects of the car’s running operation.
Inside, the EQS continues the tech-focused theme with standard dual 12.3-inch and 12.9-inch capacitive touchscreens. The optionally available MBUX Hyperscreen, which we covered in a separate article published earlier, spans the entire width of the dashboard and includes three screens sitting under a single class cover. The Hyperscreen gives the front seat passenger their own dedicated display and control area as well.
The EQS will come standard with a system called Energizing Air Control Plus, which actively monitors the air quality outside and view details of the current air quality in the infotainment screen system. A standard onboard HEPA filter, meanwhile, filters out harmful pollution particles, pollen and other airborne substances that occupants would rather not breathe into their lungs. A pre-entry climate control setting also allows users to condition the cabin air before entering the vehicle.
In Canada, buyers of the Mercedes EQS will also receive three complimentary years of Mercedes me Charge and Green Charging, which allows users to easily pay for charging at stations nationwide using an integrated automatic payment function. Individual charging processes are then clearly listed in a monthly invoice. The Mercedes me system also allows users to easily identify and find charging stalls that pull energy from renewable sources to minimize the environmental impact of their day-to-day travels.
Pricing for the 2022 Mercedes-Benz EQS has yet to be announced. The electric luxury sedan will begin arriving at Mercedes-Benz dealers nationwide this fall.
