The overhauled 2022 Honda Civic made its official debut, introducing a redesigned exterior, new technology, and more efficient powertrains to the best-selling car in Canada.
Honda provided us with a sneak preview of the 11th-generation Civic’s design earlier this year, but this marks the first time we’ve seen the production-ready model. If you noticed that it looks bigger, you're right. The sedan’s wheelbase has grown by 3.5 cm, while the rear track is 1.2 cm wider. Honda says the additional stability afforded by the wider rear track is emphasized by the vehicle’s pronounced rear shoulders and elongated LED taillights, while the lower beltline and door-mounted side mirrors help improve visibility. The front end, meanwhile, has a clean appearance with a simplified grille design, wide-set LED headlights, and available LED foglights.
In Canada, two engines will be available in the 2022 Honda Civic from launch: a naturally aspirated 2.0-litre four-cylinder and a turbocharged 1.5-litre four-cylinder. The 2.0-litre engine will come standard in the LX and Sport trims and produces 158 horsepower and 138 lb-ft of torque. The turbocharged engine, meanwhile, will be standard in the EX and range-topping Touring trims and is good for 180 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque – an increase of six horsepower and 15 lb-ft over the 1.5L engine in the 2021 Honda Civic. Both are paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT).
Inside, the 2022 Honda Civic benefits from a raft of new technology, including a standard seven-inch infotainment screen for LX, Sport, and EX trim levels. The loaded Civic Touring, meanwhile, gets a large nine-inch infotainment screen, the largest touchscreen ever offered in a Honda vehicle. Both screens come standard with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while Touring models also receive a wireless charging pad as standard. Additionally, the LX, Sport, and EX trims feature a standard seven-inch LCD instrument panel with a digital speedometer and tach, as well as a physical speedometer on the right-hand side. The Touring has a larger 10.2-inch digital instrument panel display, which can be easily customized using the corresponding buttons on the multifunction steering wheel.
The Honda Sensing suite of active safety and driver assist technology is standard as well. Honda Sensing comprises several different active safety technologies, such as lane keep assist and adaptive cruise control, and has been slightly improved for the 2022 Honda Civic with the addition of traffic jam assist and low-speed braking control. The safety of the vehicle is further enhanced by a new front airbag with a donut shape, which is designed to cradle and hold the occupant’s head and neck in the event of a collision to reduce rotation and prevent further injury.
Canadian consumers will be happy to learn that production of the Honda Civic sedan will continue to take place at the automaker’s plant in Alliston, Ont., however, the hatchback model, which has yet to debut, will be produced at Honda’s plant in Greensburg, Ind. Canadian-specific pricing and fuel economy details should be revealed closer to the compact’s Canadian market launch later this year.
