Subaru Teases Solterra EV Crossover

Subaru's first international-market electric vehicle has a name. The Subaru Solterra is set to go on sale in the middle of next year, though we're still not sure when we'll see it revealed.

The model will be the first EV for Subaru to be sold around the world, and it will also be the first Subaru model to be built on the new electric platform that the automaker is developing with Toyota. The e-Subaru Global Platform (also known as the e-Toyota New Global Architecture) will let the two brands build multiple types of electric vehicles. Subaru says it will use a variety of front, centre, and rear modules to create different body styles and sizes. Previous announcements from Toyota said that the shared models would leverage Subaru's experience and expertise with all-wheel drive

The name comes from sol and terra, the Latin words for "sun" and "earth". The automaker says that the name is meant to "appreciate mother nature and further advance the form of coexistence with it," as well as to underscore the go-anywhere image of the Subaru brand. Subaru calls it a C-segment vehicle, which would put it in the same size class as the brand's Forester crossover.

Subaru has yet to say when the Solterra would be fully revealed, but it is expected to go on sale in the middle of next year in markets including Canada, Japan, the U.S., Europe, and China.
