Toyota has just revealed the all-new 2022 GR 86 for the Canadian market, going upscale with new looks and highly refined interior options. It also boasts a larger engine, a more rigid chassis, and keeps its track-friendly features for enthusiast buyers.
The biggest news for the car is the replacement of the 2.0L horizontally opposed four-cylinder with a new 2.4L engine. It's still naturally aspirated to improve throttle response and driver engagement; but the new engine makes 228 hp instead of 205 hp, and 184 lb-ft of torque instead of 156 lb-ft, with more torque nearly everywhere in the engine's power band. Gone is the torque dip of the old car and the 0–60 mph time has been slashed from 7.2 to 6.3 seconds for stick-shift cars and 8.2 to 6.8 for the automatic.
While the chassis has some carryover from last year, styling is significantly updated, including a new ducktail spoiler (Premium only) and a larger grille. New ducting keeps airflow moving, helping to reduce lift. Reinforcements front and rear add rigidity and allow the suspension to better handle its work with aluminum roof and fender panels keeping curb weight at 1,270 kg.
Other performance features include a Torsen limited-slip differential as well as a tire change. While the base model gets Michelin Primacy HP tires on 17-inch wheels, Premium grade cars get Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires on black forged 18-inch wheels. With either wheel, the fold-down rear seats allow enough room for a set of track-day tires, Toyota says.
Both trims get interior upgrades that include an all-new cockpit and 7.0-inch display featuring a track mode complete with real-time readouts of crucial gauges. Front buckets are standard with leather and Alcantara on Premium trim cars. The 8.0-inch infotainment system offers Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as well as satellite radio.
Automatic cars get Subaru EyeSight safety including pre-collision braking, adaptive cruise, and other handy assistance tech not available on manual-equipped versions.
While pricing wasn't announced, Toyota did hint that it would be close to that of the current car to appeal to grassroots racers and sports car drivers. For reference, the outgoing 2020 Toyota 86 starts from $30,150. Expect the 2022 Toyota GR 86 on sale before the end of the year.
