A battery-electric version of the iconic Mercedes-Benz G-Class SUV looks set to make its debut at the upcoming Munich motor show in Germany.
According to British automotive publication Autocar, the rumoured electric G-Class will debut in concept form in Munich next month and will be called EQG. The EQ nomenclature is used for Mercedes' electric models.
Trademark applications filed by Daimler appear to back this intel up, with the automaker filing to reserve the EQG 560 and EQG 580 nameplates with the United States Patent and Trademark Office earlier this month. The automaker also filed to reserve the name "EQG" with the Canadian patent office in 2016.
Rumours indicate the Mercedes-Benz EQG will utilize the SUV’s ladder frame platform and will share a 107.8 kWh battery pack with the existing Mercedes-Benz EQS 580 sedan. The EQG 580 trademark appears to suggest the SUV will share electric motors with the EQS 580, as well, which is rated at 516 horsepower and 631 pound-feet of torque. The EQG 560 name would likely be used on a slightly less powerful version of the vehicle.
From a styling standpoint, the EQG concept is expected to retain the traditional boxy silhouette of the G-Class, although it will adopt some traditional Mercedes EQ styling cues as well, such as a smoothed over one-piece grille. Inside, the SUV will feature the latest version of Mercedes’ MBUX infotainment system with new EV-specific menu pages.
A production version of the Mercedes-Benz EQG Concept is expected to arrive for the 2024 model year. We'll have all the official details on the concept model following its rumored debut early next month.
