Refreshed 2022 Volkswagen Jetta Gets More Power, More Features

Volkswagen Canada today revealed an update for the 2022 Jetta compact sedan, which will have a new engine, refreshed styling, and new standard comfort and tech features when it goes on sale in the fourth quarter of this year.

The new Jetta will trade its current 1.4L turbo four-cylinder motor for the newer 1.5L turbo four-cylinder used in the Taos subcompact crossover. It now has 158 hp, which is 11 more than the 1.4L, while matching its 184 lb-ft of torque. As before, however, the Jetta will be offered with six-speed manual and eight-speed automatic transmissions.

Volkswagen says the 1.5L promises more economical performance thanks to what it claims is one of the first volume-production variable geometry turbochargers available in North America; the new motor also boasts reduced friction, a more sophisticated cooling system for quicker warm-ups, and higher-pressure fuel injectors.

Upgrading to the sportier GLI will get you a 2.0L turbo four-cylinder engine whose 228 hp and 258 lb-ft carry over unchanged from the outgoing 2021 model. Also carried forward are the GLI’s six-speed stickshift and seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmissions.

The Jetta and GLI both get updated front and rear styling, including a new grille and headlights, and new bumpers, colours and wheels. Jetta models also get chrome side window trim that switches to black for the GLI.

VW will offer the 2022 Jetta in familiar Trendline, Comfortline and Highline trims, while the GLI will come in a single, fully loaded package. A heated leatherette steering wheel and an 8.0-inch digital gauge display are new to the base Trendline trim, while Highline and GLI will get a configurable 10-inch digital cluster.

The Comfortline, Highline, and GLI models will also come with VW’s MIB3 infotainment system, with smartphone integration and wireless device charging.

Other Jetta features include LED headlights and daytime running lights, heated front seats, and forward crash avoidance assist; Comfortline, Highline and GLI will add blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, automatic high beams, lane keep assist and adaptive cruise control.

The Jetta will soon be VW’s sole compact economy car model in Canada with the Golf hatchback set to disappear in favour of the Taos crossover. Volkswagen will offer the latest GTI and Golf R hot hatches here, though.

Volkswagen says it will announce full pricing and features for the 2022 Jetta closer to its Canadian launch later this year.
