2022 Subaru WRX Debuts with 271 HP, Standard 6-Speed Manual

The 2022 Subaru WRX has made its official debut, ushering in the next generation of rally-bred, road-going performance.

The 2022 Subaru WRX represents the second generation of the nameplate after it split from an Impreza performance variant into its own model for 2014. This new model has ditched the old VA-generation body for Subaru’s new Global Platform, which also underpins the Crosstrek, Forester, Legacy and Outback. The automaker says the new platform offers increased safety, improved dynamics, and reductions in noise, vibration, and harshness over the VA chassis. It also pulls inspiration from the world of rallying with a longer suspension stroke and ride height, increasing stability and grip off-road.

Power in the new WRX comes from a turbocharged 2.4-litre Boxer engine delivering 271 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and 258 lb-ft of torque from 2,000-5,200 rpm. A six-speed manual will remain the standard transmission option, while a new continuously variable transmission (CVT) is offered at a price premium. While a belt-driven CVT technically has no physical gears, Subaru’s software tuning can mimic a traditional eight-speed transmission with paddle shifters for a sportier driving experience. The automaker's symmetrical all-wheel drive comes standard across all trim levels, of course.

2022 Subaru WRX models with the CVT will come standard with Subaru’s EyeSight driver assistance tech on all trim levels. EyeSight uses cameras to monitor the road ahead, supporting various active safety items like lane departure prevention, advanced adaptive cruise control, lane centring, automatic emergency steering, pre-collision braking and more.

The biggest change to the WRX’s cabin for 2022 is the addition of an available tablet-style 11.6-inch infotainment display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The top version of the tablet display includes TomTom navigation with voice-activated commands. A 7.0-inch screen is standard in the base model, but the tablet screen is standard on every trim from the Sport up. Available trims for 2022 include WRX, Sport, Sport with EyeSight, Sport-tech, and Sport-tech with EyeSight.

The 2022 Subaru WRX will be available at retailers in 2022, the automaker says. Canadian pricing and fuel economy are not yet available.
