Early next year will mark the beginning of a major Mazda model shakeup as the brand prepares to launch a slew of new crossover and SUV models around the world.
In North America, a new model called the CX-50 will be added to the compact end of the Mazda spectrum, sharing a platform with the CX-30 and Mazda3 but boasting “enhanced AWD capabilities and functionality for consumers with outdoor active lifestyles.”
The CX-50 will be built in Huntsville, Ala., at the factory Mazda shares with Toyota, starting in January; Mazda says it will not replace the CX-5 compact crossover, which will “see its design evolve and its model lineup enhanced.”
After that, Mazda will roll out a pair of larger SUV models based on an all-new platform built around a longitudinally-mounted turbocharged straight-six engine. The three-row CX-90 will replace the current CX-9, and a two-row model called CX-70 will slot in below it. This platform will also get plug-in hybrid options.
Also set to arrive in the first half of 2022 is a new version of the MX-30 PHEV with a rotary engine, which will be followed “around 2025” by a full EV product line on a dedicated battery-electric platform.
Elsewhere in the world, Mazda will introduce the CX-60 and CX-80 SUVs, both of which are being designed with narrower roads and smaller parking lots in mind.
Mazda says it will reveal technical details and pricing for all of the new additions closer to their respective arrivals.
