Hyundai's much-anticipated Ioniq 5 electric vehicle (EV) is set to arrive at dealers in Canada starting in December. The price starts from $44,999 with the longest-range model priced just under $52,000.
The 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 is the automaker's first EV made on a new purpose-built EV platform that will also underpin Kia and Genesis models. The styling is based on (and very close to) the retro-looking Hyundai 45 concept car, which was a reimagining of the original Hyundai Pony.
That Pony callback might be a bit misleading, though, for those who remember the subcompact hatchback. The Ioniq 5 rides on a 3,000-mm wheelbase, making it longer between the wheels than the three-row Hyundai Palisade. Hyundai calls this a crossover, not a hatchback, making this more horse and less pony.
The Ioniq 5 lineup will start with the rear-wheel drive single-motor Essential trim, offering a 354-km estimated range from a 58-kWh battery, 225 hp, and a price of $44,999. That allows the vehicle to qualify for all current Canadian EV incentives. The Preferred Long Range model has a 77.4-kWh battery and an estimated 480 km range for $51,999, while the Preferred Long Range model with AWD offers 415 km from the larger battery, 320 hp, and a price of $54,999.
Other features of the Ioniq 5 include 800V fast charging that Hyundai says can charge from 10 to 80 per cent in just 18 minutes. It will also offer the ability to power small appliances using a house-style plug and even charge other EVs. Hyundai's LED lighting elements will remain for the head and taillight signatures. For the first time in a Hyundai, the head-up display will get an augmented reality mode.
Hyundai says that the 2022 Ioniq 5 should start to arrive at dealers nationwide in December. Priority will go to the more than 2,000 Canadian buyers who have submitted pre-orders for the EV.
