2022 Mazda CX-5 Priced With Content Upgrades and Standard AWD

Over the last half-decade, Mazda has been surprisingly quick to make model year and even mid-year updates to its vehicles. Take the CX-5, for example, which saw a new infotainment system across the line and the addition of the brand's driver assistance suite to the base model for 2021.5. Just six months later, the 2022 Mazda CX-5 sees even more updates including some styling changes, engine improvements, and standard all-wheel drive.

The CX-5 is Mazda's best seller in Canada, so keeping it fresh seems like the easy decision. This year's updates give it a more refined front and rear, trading some character lines for new body surfacing Mazda says creates "a distinguished and elegant appearance." The front end features a new bumper, wider grille wing, a new grille texture, and new headlights. These are matched in the rear with new taillights and larger twin exhaust pipes.

Inside, Mazda has replaced the seats with new thrones designed to be more comfortable and feel more natural. The six-speed auto has been tweaked for more responsiveness, and changes to the suspension, including added rigidity, are meant to improve handling while quieting noise and vibration.

All-wheel drive is now standard, even on the base CX-5 GX. That feature joins the i-Activsense safety suite added for 2021.5 with radar cruise, front smart brake support, pedestrian detection, blind-spot monitoring, and lane-departure warning. Rounding out the list of new and improved features are automatic LED headlights and rain-sensing wipers.

Mazda has renewed the Kuro package and its Garnet Red leather interior for 2022 (with black optional). White and red paint colours have been added to Polymetal Grey and black. The Kuro package also marks the first appearance of Mi-Drive, Mazda's drive mode selector with normal, off-road, and sport modes.

A Sport Design trim is new, adding gloss black finishes to the grille, mirrors, arches, and rocker covers. The grille gets red accents as does the interior. Signature is updated with body-colour cladding instead of grey.

Lastly, the optional 2.5L turbo engine now makes 256 hp on 93-octane, six more than last year. On regular, it makes the same 227 as last year.

The 2022 Mazda CX-5 goes on sale this winter, starting from $30,200.
