Starting in summer 2022, electric vehicle (EV) drivers will be able to charge their vehicles at ONroute rest stops along Ontario highways 400 and 401.
The Ivy charging network today announced that 17 ONroute locations will have two to four Level 3 fast chargers in operation “in time for summer 2022,” and another three rest stops will have charge points by end of next year. More ONroute facilities will get chargers sometime between 2023 and 2025.
Installed in partnership with Canadian Tire, the Ivy ONroute chargers will offer charging speeds of up to 150 kW and promise to add as much as 100 km of driving range in about 20 minutes at a price of $0.30/minute, according to the Ivy website. To use Ivy’s charging stations, you must become a member by downloading a smartphone app or requesting an RFID card that you can use at the charging station. We've reached out to Ivy to find out if non-members can also use the chargers by tapping or swiping a credit card.
The new Level 3 chargers will be marketed under Ivy’s Charge & Go banner, which already includes 28 locations; the stations set to open next year will expand the company’s Level 3 network to 60 locations with 160 charge points.
Ivy also operates a series of Level 2 Park & Charge locations in partnership with municipalities and businesses in Ontario.
The Ivy charging network is jointly owned by Ontario Hydro and Ontario Power Generation, and opened its first charging station in Huntsville, Ont., in September 2019.
