AutoTrader’s Top Searched Vehicles in 2021 Reveal Consistent Trends

As the country’s largest and most trusted automotive marketplace, millions of Canadians each month use AutoTrader to search for their next new or used vehicle. After crunching a year’s worth of data, AutoTrader’s Top Searched Vehicles of 2021 reveal that despite a tumultuous year, Canadians stayed loyal to their favourite vehicles, with the Ford F-150 emerging once again as the Top Searched Vehicle of the year.

In addition to being the country’s most popular-selling vehicle for decades, the Ford F-150 has also been the Top Searched Vehicle on AutoTrader for seven years straight ever since this annual study became inaugurated. For the second year in a row, the Ford Mustang and BMW 3 Series rounded out the top three, and the list is remarkably consistent with last year’s results except for a few shifting positions.

It’s no secret that 2021 presented many challenges for the automotive industry and for Canadian car shoppers. With the ongoing pandemic and global microchip shortage causing inventory issues and record-high demand and prices for both new and used vehicles, it was certainly a unique year. Despite these market shifts, however, Canadians remained loyal to their favourite vehicles, suggesting that these factors were not deterrents for car shoppers and the consistency in results can be seen as a reassuring sign.

Trucks continued to be popular nationwide, but in Alberta, the Toyota Tacoma was a new entry onto the Top 10, landing in the eighth spot. Saskatchewan’s Top Searched List had the most trucks of all the provinces and not one luxury vehicle made it onto the Prairie province’s Top 10, which was a similar story in the Maritime provinces.

As electric vehicles (EVs) continue to gain popularity, Tesla dominated the Top Searched EVs in Canada for 2021. Green car inventory on the AutoTrader marketplace increased 31 per cent year over year, while searches for hybrid and electric vehicles increased a whopping 71 per cent over last year.
