GMC has just revealed the first preview of its all-electric full-size pickup truck. The electric Sierra will be the third EV from the brand and is set to be fully revealed next year.
Like the Hummer EV, which is a GMC model, the Sierra EV will be based on GM's Ultium platform and will be built at GM's Factory Zero assembly plant located in Hamtramck, Mich.
GMC will launch the electric truck only in Denali trim, the brand's high-end luxury grade, meaning buyers looking for an EV work truck will have to look to Ford's F-150 Lightning or wait until GMC expands the lineup. It's a similar strategy as the Hummer EV, which was first available in Edition 1 top-spec trim with the next trim down arriving next fall and the base model not on sale until 2024.
“Sierra Denali holds tremendous equity for GMC and our customers,” said Duncan Aldred, GMC vice president. “We now have an opportunity to evolve Sierra’s capabilities and technologies, as afforded by transitioning to an all-electric propulsion while also elevating the luxurious design and comfort associated with Denali.”
Expect performance similar to the Hummer EVs, which boasts up to 1,000 hp and supercar acceleration, along with towing up up to 7,500 lbs and an EV range estimate of more than 550 km. No word on when production will start, but expect to see plenty about GMC's electric pickup as it gets closer to reality.
