2023 Alfa Romeo Tonale Subcompact SUV Debuts with Available Plug-In Hybrid Powertrain

The 2023 Alfa Romeo Tonale subcompact crossover has made its official debut ahead of its arrival in Canada early next year.

The Tonale (pronounced Toe-nah-ley) arrives as the second crossover model in Alfa Romeo’s lineup, slotting in underneath the compact Stelvio. While smaller than the Stelvio, the Tonale stays true to Alfa’s familiar design language, incorporating the Italian automaker’s iconic “Scudetto” shield grille and offering its phone dial alloy wheels. The Tonale also introduces a new “3+3” LED headlight design, which is reflected in the three-segment taillight design as well.

From launch, the Tonale will be offered as a plug-in hybrid with a 1.3-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, a 90-kW electric motor mounted on the rear axle, and 15.5-kWh lithium-ion battery. This setup produces roughly 272 horsepower, with 180 horsepower coming from the gas engine and the rest from the electric motors. A 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine will also be offered, which is rated at 256 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. The plug-in hybrid powertrain is paired with a six-speed automatic, while the 2.0L links up with a nine-speed automatic.

Inside, the Tonale features a standard Uconnect 5 infotainment system with a 10.25-inch centre touchscreen and 12.3-inch driver information display. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, along with an onboard Amazon Alexa voice assistant. The infotainment system also features fully customizable interfaces, with the ability to store up to five different user profiles with preferences for music and vehicle operation.

A host of driver assistance systems will be standard, as well, including adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring with rear cross-path detection, forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, drive attention assist, and lane-departure warning with lane-keep assist. A Level 2 semi-autonomous Traffic Jam Assist system is also available as an option.

The 2023 Alfa Romeo Tonale will be offered in two trim levels in Canada: Sprint and Veloce. The Sprint serves as the base trim, while the Veloce is the range-topping trim and is, therefore, the sportiest and most luxurious of the two.

The Italian automaker will produce the Tonale at its Giambattista Vico plant in Naples, Italy. It will begin arriving at North American dealerships in the first quarter of 2023. Pricing has yet to be announced.
