It's been 16 years since the Cars film franchise took off and brought Sally Carrera to the screen as a foil to Lightning McQueen. Porsche and Pixar have been working for months on bringing Sally to life to celebrate her birthday and will be auctioning the results to support multiple charitable efforts.
In the Cars world, Sally Carrera, voiced by Bonnie Hunt, is a motelier and the town attorney for Radiator Springs, moving to the small town after tiring of the fast lane in California. She also happens to be a 2002 Porsche 911 Carrera.
A team that includes Cars Production Designer Bob Pauley, Style Porsche in Weissach, and Porsche Exclusiv Manufactur in Stuttgart, have been working on building a real-life version of Sally to mark not the anniversary of the film, but what would have been Sally's 20th birthday. Recent global events led the team to speed up the build.
"We wanted to help, somehow, and as a team, we realized we could perhaps harness what we were working on to raise money. The whole project began with the premise that Sally’s character was devoted to helping others and it seems right that this should continue 20 years on”, explained Pixar's Jay Ward.
"We are, for the first time ever, going to build a brand new, street-legal Porsche 911 inspired by the special character we created – Sally Carrera. Only one will ever be made. It will be auctioned with all proceeds specifically aimed to help children, supporting education programs for young girls in the U.S. through Girls Inc. and refugee families fleeing Ukraine, predominately women and children," Ward said.
Construction of the car is already underway, with Pixar and Porsche both working on the effort. Porsche has said it won't be an exact copy, but we expect a lot more than a blue brand new 911 to be the result. Porsche has revealed drawings that show off what it might look like, as well as concepts the team considered but couldn't execute.
When it's finished, Sally will be auctioned by RM Sotheby's, and Porsche says it will be a road car, not just a showpiece. To go along with it, Porsche Design will be making a one-off watch for the buyer that reflects the car. More information on when the auction will take place is yet to come.
