The third-generation Range Rover Sport has just debuted with a new platform, a range of electrified powertrains, and a completely overhauled exterior and cabin.
This latest iteration of the Range Rover Sport introduces a new rear-wheel drive-based architecture to the nameplate, which is 35 per cent stiffer than the chassis in the outgoing model for improved handling performance and feel. Every new Range Rover Sport model will also come fitted with adjustable Dynamic Air Suspension and all-wheel steering, the latter of which promises to give this performance-minded luxury crossover “the turning circle of a hatchback and on-road agility of a much smaller car.”
The 2023 Range Rover Sport will offer a variety of electrified powertrains globally. It’s currently not clear which of these will be offered here in Canada, although at least one of the two plug-in hybrid models, the P440e and P510e, will likely be sold here.
The Range Rover Sport P440e model pairs Land Rover’s turbocharged 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder engine with a small electric motor and 38.2-kWh battery. This model will boast a total system output of 434 horsepower and an estimated all-electric driving range of 88 kilometres. The closely related P510e, meanwhile, has the same plug-in hybrid powertrain but with a higher output of 503 horsepower. Land Rover will also offer less powerful P360 and P400 models, which will pair the 3.0-litre inline-six engine with a 48-volt mild-hybrid setup.
The current Range Rover Sport’s tried-and-true 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine sourced from BMW will also return for this next-generation model. This eight-cylinder motor is rated at 523 horsepower and will enable the luxury crossover to hustle from zero to 100 km/h in about 4.3 seconds with launch control engaged. A battery-electric version will also debut for the 2024 model year, however, Range Rover is not offering up very many details on this EV variant for the time being.
Inside, Land Rover promises the new Sport will offer “the latest technologies and the finest materials,” including standard wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a new 13.1-inch curved infotainment display and a huge 13.7-inch digital driver’s display. While typical grained leather upholstery will be available, the British automaker will also offer a more eco-friendly alternative called Ultrafabric – a sustainable premium fabric material made from polyurethane.
All Range Rover Sport models will also come fitted with a comprehensive suite of active safety tech, including a 3D surround-view camera, automatic emergency braking, front and rear parking sensors, lane keep assist, traffic sign recognition, a driver-attention monitor and adaptive cruise control.
The new Range Rover Sport will enter production at the automaker’s Solihull Manufacturing Facility in the United Kingdom later this year. Canadian pricing starts at $101,750 for the P400 Dynamic S model mild-hybrid, $108,450 for the P400 Dynamic SE, $123,050 for the P440e Dynamic HSE plug-in hybrid, and $133,650 for the P530 First Edition with the turbo V8, and is available to order now.
