Volkswagen has just premiered its latest ID. electric vehicle, the ID. Aero. It is Volkswagen's first fully electric sedan and will be coming to Canada, showing that the automaker isn't ready to give up on the four-door just yet despite the discontinuation of the gas-powered Passat and Arteon.
The Volkswagen ID. Aero looks like a sedan variant of the ID. Space Vizzion wagon concept the automaker revealed back in 2019. Like that car, it is extremely aerodynamically efficient – VW says the coefficient of drag is just 0.23. This is a show car, so it's not clear if detailing like the touch-surface door handles will see production, but since they'll boost range, the possibility seems high. The ID. honeycomb nose accents and LED lights will see production, they're a big part of the ID. brand signature look.
At "almost five metres long," the ID. Aero is a full-size sedan. The dimensions would put it right on top of the outgoing Passat, which was 4.8 m in length and offered a massive cabin and trunk space.
Built on the MEB modular electric architecture that underpins Volkswagen's other ID. models like the ID.4, the ID. Aero will have a 77 kWh battery pack. It's expected to offer a range of more than 600 km, as measured on the WLTP cycle. Canadian range figures will be lower due to differences in the test procedures.
Production of the ID. Aero is expected to start next year with models built in China as well as in Emden, Germany. The Chinese market will actually get two versions of the car, one for each of the two VW joint ventures there. Volkswagen Canada reports that the ID. Aero will come to Canada, and it is expected to arrive sometime in 2024.
