Ford Launches Lifted 2023 Maverick Tremor With Upgraded AWD

Even the smallest Ford pickup is getting the off-road treatment. The 2023 Maverick is adding a Tremor Off-Road package meant to give the little truck more off-road capability without pushing buyers into a larger model.

Ford will offer the Tremor package on XLT and Lariat trim Mavericks with the 2.0L EcoBoost four-cylinder. 2.0L-equipped versions of the pickup are the only ones to offer all-wheel drive, but the Tremor gets a special new AWD system.

The Tremor adds a twin-clutch rear-drive unit with a differential lock. This lets it send nearly all of the rear-axle torque to just one wheel. Unlike with an open rear differential, the twin-clutch unit sends that torque to the wheel with grip, not the one that is slipping.

Also new is Trail Control, an off-road cruise control system. Pick a speed (very slow off-road speeds) and the system applies the throttle and brakes for you to get through mud, up and down hills, and over obstacles.

Tremor-specific springs and shocks give the truck a one-inch lift for more ground clearance on the trail. A heavy-duty transmission cooler helps keep the gearbox happy when you're crawling at low speeds and high loads, while upgraded axle shafts withstand the demands of off-roading.

17-inch alloys in orange and gray are Tremor-specific, wearing all-terrain tires for off-road traction. A new front fascia gives Tremor a more aggressive approach angle and steel skid plates help protect the underside.

The 2023 Maverick Tremor has a max payload of 544 kg (1,200 lb) and max towing of 907 kg (2,000 lb) – 136 kg (300 lb) less payload capacity compared with the standard truck. And it won't offer the 4K tow package. The off-road-focused Tremor isn't the one if your priority is towing and hauling.

Like any good off-road package, Ford has made some cosmetic changes as well. A special grille and blacked-out Ford logos and lights along with orange tow hooks for a start. A Tremor Appearance package adds a grey-painted roof and mirrors and black graphics.

The black seats have stitched Tremor logos and orange accents. Those orange accents carry over onto the center console, vents, and door handles.

2023 Ford Maverick orders are open now, but orders for Tremor won't open until September. Production of the 2023 Maverick starts in the fall.
