Porsche has a bit of a soft spot for Sally from the Pixar movie Cars. Well, we all do, but Sally is a 2002 Porsche 911 Carrera, so the brand is probably an even bigger fan. So much so that Porsche has built a sort of replica of the Radiator Springs town attorney and the owner of the Cosy Cone motel. A real-life, one-off version of Sally Carrera will be auctioned off for charity later this week.
"Vehicles need a face and a story. And the animated Pixar's film Cars has impressively transferred done just that: brought cars to life on the big screen,” said Porsche VP of communications Dr. Sebastian Rudolph. "The story conveys values such as friendship, love and mutual support - and in the middle of it all is a Porsche: 'Sally Carrera.' Together with Pixar, we have brought the spirit of Sally to life in a new way, not on the screen, but off the screen. With this one-off street legal 911, the 'Sally Special,' which we are auctioning for charity, we want to help people who urgently need support, quite in keeping with the spirit of the film character."
Porsche's team started working on the car last year and brought in team members from the original Cars film including Bob Pauley, the production designer who first designed Sally. The team at Porsche included staff from Porsche Exclusiv Manufaktur and Style Porsche.
They started with a current-generation 911 GTS and repainted it in Sallybluemetallic. The special paint was made to match the on-screen car and is only being used once. It was hand applied to the car just for this project.
Sally Carrera's turbo-style wheels have gone out of fashion since 2002, so Porsche made a new set with the same inspiration. They're 20-inches in the front and 21 in the back to fit the new car, but the twisted five-arm design looks great with the update.
Under the 911's rear spoiler, Porsche has copied Sally's tattoo, the pinstriping she was not exactly happy Lightning McQueen noticed in the first place.
We never see inside Sally in the movies, but since this is a real car, Porsche has made some changes there too. Porsche has painted the trim in Sallybluemetallic and given the seats a special Pepita houndstooth cloth made just for the 911 Sally Special. In place of the regular 911's drive mode selector on the steering wheel is a Kachow mode, paying homage to Lightning McQueen's famous catchphrase.
Porsche is auctioning the car on August 20 as part of RM Sotheby's Monterey Car Week sale. The proceeds will to go two groups. The first is Girls Inc., a group that "equips girls with the knowledge and skills to effect positive changes in their lives and become leaders who will change the world," in the U.S. and Canada. The second is USA for UNHCR, an organization that supports refugees including those from Ukraine.
