Mercedes-Benz is updating its biggest SUV. Following refreshes to the smaller GLE models, the 2024 GLS is getting a larger and more imposing grille, new headlights, and a more prominent bumper. On the inside, Mercedes-Benz is updating the infotainment system and making the Maybach model even more upscale.
The key to the update is the new grille. It isn't that much larger than before, but with four bold galvanized louvres, it certainly looks like it is. The GLS is now properly imposing.
Maybach GLS models also have a new grille. There are fewer of the silver grille slats and they're set farther apart, making it look more refined compared to the grille it replaces. Also new for the Maybach GLS are new seat covers, a 23-inch wheel design, and special ambient lighting projections.
The GLS has larger air inlet grilles below the main opening. They're finished with a gloss black surround and a large simulated bash guard underneath. New headlights get the latest Benz lighting signature. Meanwhile, the rear lamps switch to a design featuring three horizontal blocks.
Mercedes-Benz has updated the MBUX infotainment system to the latest version. There are three new display styles and three modes to choose from. Both the main and centre displays can be shown in one of seven colours to help match your dash to your ambient lighting choice.
Some commands now work without a "Hey Mercedes" prompt. Pick the optional rear seat entertainment system, and riders in the back get the same level of voice control functionality as those in the front and can use one of their three touchscreens. Other MBUX improvements include trailer towing route guidance and a new off-road mode with a transparent hood function that allows you to see what you're driving over.
Benz has also made more features standard, including goodies like adaptive high beam assist, heated and ventilated seats, and even AMG exhaust and a new sound system. New USB ports in the back of the centre console support up to 100w of output, meaning they'll charge your laptop.
Chassis changes are small, but the AMG Ride Control+ adaptive suspension has been tweaked with a software update. Similarly, the active roll control has been changed. Both changes are meant to make a wider gap between comfort and handling modes.
Powertrains stay the same. The Mercedes GLS 450 has a 375-hp inline six, and GLS 580 offers a 510-hp 4.0L V8. The Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600 boosts that 4.0L V8 to 550 hp. And, of course, there is the GLS 63+, which offers 603 hp, 48V mild hybrid assist, and a full complement of AMG modifications in the name of speed and luxury.
The 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS models should hit dealers in Canada late this year.
