A refreshed 2024 Ford F-150 has debuted at the 2023 Detroit Auto Show. The updated pickup truck gets a new base engine, more hybrid availability, and a fancy new tailgate that Ford hopes will allow the popular model to be Canada's best-selling vehicle for another year.
The 2.7L EcoBoost V6 is now standard and replaces the now-discontinued 3.3L V6. Ford didn't include specs for the 2024 model, but we expect the base engine to make around the same 325 hp and 400 lb-ft as last year.
Ford's 3.5L EcoBoost, 3.5L High Output, and 3.5L PowerBoost hybrid engines remain in the lineup. The 5.2L supercharged V8 that powers the Raptor R will also be available next year. The PowerBoost Hybrid system will be offered on more trim grades, now on XL through Platinum Plus. The 5.0L V8 will remain on the options list as well.
The F-150's peak payload capacity for 2024 is 2,455 pounds. That's 860 lbs lower than last year, and while some of that is due to the V8 leaving the lineup, it's still 780 lbs less than the best V6 of 2023. Towing is also reduced, with 13,500 lbs vs. 14,000 with a V6 in 2023. We've reached out to Ford for more details on this surprise, but strangely, even with the lower numbers, the 2024 F-150 is still best-in-class for both towing and payload.
Ford will continue to offer its Pro Power Onboard system. The power system, which gives users household-style electrical outlets, will be offered in 2.0-kW form on gas-only trucks (about the same power as a single circuit at home), 2.4-kW on PowerBoost Hybrid trucks, and the optional 7.2-kW system that can run most of a house will be offered on the hybrid.
Advanced driver assistance systems like Pro Trailer Hitch Assist, Pro Trailer Backup Assist, and Onboard Scales will all carry over onto the new truck. They're designed to make towing easier for the more casual weekend hauler, but they're handy for everyone who has to wrangle a trailer in reverse.
BlueCruise, Ford's hands-off driver assistance system, is upgraded to version 1.2. This adds lane change assist, in-lane repositioning, and general operational improvements.
A new tailgate might be the coolest F-150 innovation. After lagging behind GM's Multipro step for a few years, Ford has added what it calls the Pro Access Tailgate. It adds an inner tailgate to the main one, giving you a mini-door.
The Pro Access Tailgate has three detents, so it will open just a bit (for when you're hitched up), a lot (for close-quarters access), or 100 degrees for loading and unloading. The entire tailgate can still open conventionally.
Also new is a bed storage box. The box is standard on all F-150 models and is mounted on the right side of the box within reach through the new tailgate. Buyers who opt out of Pro Power Onboard get a second storage box on the left, and both have a "heavy-duty locking mechanism."
Cabin changes include Sync 4 on a 12-inch touchscreen that is now standard. There is also a 12-inch digital cluster, with higher-spec trucks offering a head-up display for the first time.
Ford is offering Stolen Vehicle Services (SVS) on the F-150, the first model in North America to get it. The SVS system is a connected service that alerts the customer to any attempts to access or tamper with the vehicle, which can be reported stolen and tracked through a Ford call centre.
The truck gets some cosmetic changes, including new grille designs and standard LED lighting. STX customers also get new Electric Lime accents and new wheel designs. Platinum Plus is a new grade that replaces Limited as the top truck and has a "smoked truffle" interior.
Lastly, Ford is simplifying the order process. Making some popular features like the larger fuel tank and Class IV trailer hitch standard means order complexity is down 90 per cent. This should cut costs for Ford, but also potentially make it easier to find the truck you want.
The F-150 Tremor, Ford's off-road package, is back. It gets a new optional modular front bumper and a new grille, plus Ford has added a light bar and dealer-installed winch. The F-150 Raptor is also around for 2024, and it gets new Dual Live Valve shocks from Fox.
Expect the refreshed 2024 Ford F-150 to arrive before the end of the year. More details, specs, and pricing will be announced just before the pickup hits dealers.
