BMW has just launched the second-generation X2. The compact BMW crossover gets more power from its four-cylinder engines, a new curved display, and updated styling that makes it look much more mature than its predecessor.
The BMW X2 joined the X1 in 2017 as a more style-forward alternative. It was on the front end of the still-expanding "crossover coupe" segment, trading some outright cargo capacity for a more stylish look.
While the first-gen X2 looked more like an expanded hot hatchback than a crossover, the 2024 BMW X2 flips the script. With a more upright nose, larger grilles, and angry LED accent lights, the new X2 looks more aggressive than before. Its design better separates it from the X1 as being the "fun" one. The rear design also looks much more in sync with the rest of the shape, with a much more coupe-like hatch and rear glass.
On the inside, the X2 gets BMW's new curved display that integrates the 10.25-inch digital dash and 10.7-inch infotainment panels into one large unit. The continuous pane of glass looks smoother and orients the entire unit toward the driver.
The system runs BMW Operating System 9 with more apps, including music, video streaming, and even games. It is also capable of over-the-air upgrades. BMW says the system has more driver customizable modes, expanded natural speech voice control, and even available exterior and interior lighting sequences.
BMW Digital Cockpit Plus is standard and includes a simplified destination entry system and dynamic route mapping. The optional Digital Cockpit Professional adds augmented reality views to the navigation display, projecting where exactly turns should be made on the road.
Other in-cabin tech includes a selfie camera for taking photos or videos, even when driving. BMW Comfort Access comes with Digital Key Plus that lets you lock and unlock your BMW using your phone instead of a key.
The 2024 BMW X2 offers two four-cylinder engines, both 2.0L turbocharged units. The base engine in the xDrive 28i makes 241 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. In the X2 M35i xDrive, that engine is upgraded to 312 hp (and the same 295 lb-ft) thanks to its variable valve timing system.
M models get a more grumbly twin-exit exhaust. All models get a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission with a mechanical limited-slip differential for the front wheels.
An Adaptive M suspension is standard on the M35i and optional on the 28i models, included with the M Sport Package. BMW says the system improves comfort and agility. It also includes a sports steering rack with a more direct ratio. The M cockpit comes with heavily bolstered sports seats with even more aggressive M Sport seats on the options list.
BMW hasn't announced pricing, but the automaker did say we can expect the 2024 BMW X2 to hit showrooms in Canada this March.
