Mercedes-Benz has just revealed the AMG version of its latest coupe. The 2024 Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 will arrive in Canada later next year with 443 hp from a turbocharged 3.0L inline-six.
The CLE Coupe is a new entry in the Mercedes-Benz lineup. It replaces both the C-Class and E-Class coupe models, helping Benz shrink a very broad lineup to help make room for EVs. At 4,850 mm in length, it's slightly longer than both cars it replaces.
AMG has tuned the 3.0L inline-six with a new turbocharger and a 48V-powered electric compressor for low speeds. The engine makes 443 hp and 413 lb-ft of torque and can push that torque output to 443 lb-ft for 12 seconds in overboost mode.
A 48V electric motor mounted ahead of the transmission adds 23 hp and 151 lb-ft of torque at lower engine speeds. The mild-hybrid system also allows more use of fuel-saving engine stop-start system.
The transmission is a nine-speed automatic, also tweaked by AMG for quicker shift times, a double-declutch function, and the ability to make multi-gear downshifts. It is configured to match the drive modes ranging from Slippery to Sport+.
All-wheel drive is standard, and the system is also tailored for the different drive modes. The CLE 53 will also get a drift mode that lets it send all power to the rear wheels for tire-shredding antics.
Adaptive dampers are standard, with AMG Ride Control providing independent adjustment of both rebound and compression damping. Mercedes says that there is "noticeable differentiation" when it comes to ride quality in in the three set modes.
Rear-wheel steering is standard. An optional AMG Dynamic Plus package adds a Race drive mode with that drift function as well as active engine mounts and a special microfibre steering wheel.
AMG-specific cabin updates include AMG graphics in the gauge cluster. The AMG CLE Coupe will also offer a special steering wheel with drive-select knobs and optional AMG performance-bolstered seats.
The 2024 Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 4Matic+ Coupe is set to arrive in Canada in the second half of 2024. Expect pricing and more details closer to the on-sale date.
