Owners of Ford electric vehicles have just gained access to tens of thousands of extra charging stations. Ford has announced that the Ford F-150 Lightning and Mustang Mach-E can now charge at Tesla Supercharger stations in Canada and the U.S.
Ford had previously announced that it would be adopting the SAE J3400 charging standard, also called the North American Charging Standard (NACS), and integrating it into its new EVs beginning in 2025. Today's announcement means that existing owners will be able to use the extensive Tesla Supercharger network starting almost immediately.
Owners will need an adapter to connect their Ford EVs to the J3400 plugs at Supercharger stations. The automaker will make those adapters available for free until June 30, 2024. Ford will deliver one free adapter per vehicle, and customers must have a BlueOval Charge Network account to place the order. Tesla Destination chargers (Level 2 charge stations) are not compatible with the Ford adapter. Orders can be placed through a site Ford has set up.
Ford owners will be able to use the Plug & Charge system, which is meant to smooth starting a charging session, at Tesla Superchargers. They will need the same BlueOval Charge Network account with a stored payment method for it to work.
Supercharger locations are not currently loaded into the Ford Connected Built-In Navigation system, but Ford says the systems will be updated soon. The same applies to Apple Maps and Google Maps EV Routing systems.
Ford did not say when customers can expect their adapter to arrive after ordering. The company's site says that "Ford will fulfill Fast Charging Adapter reservations on a first-come, first-served basis. Wait times will vary based on the availability of supply." This offer is for personal-use owners, and Ford said that it will reach out to commercial customers in the spring.
