Mazda is refreshing the CX-5 compact crossover for 2022, though you might have to look closely to see some of the details. New LED headlights sit alongside lightly tweaked sheet metal and a new grille, while similar changes are made at the rear. Mazda says it has improved handling and dynamics, and all-wheel drive becomes standard across the board for the new year. The changes come just months after 2021.5 updates that included a new centre display and added driver assistance features.
The Mazda CX-5 was already sharply styled, but this year the model will get new rectangular LED lamps inside the reshaped housing. A new 3D textured grille replaces the previous mesh, and the chrome prongs that ran from the grille surround under the headlights are now gone from both sides. The lower fascia is also changed, and the tiny fog lights appear to be gone. At least from the trim pictured.
Mazda says changes at the rear are similar to those up front, but did not show them in the available photos.
The GT trim for 2022 Mazda CX-5 models will offer a Sport Appearance Package including gloss black finishes outside and red accents and stitching in the cabin. Top-trim Signature models will receive new body-colour cladding and bright silver wheels.
Mazda says that the drive modes as well as the seats, suspension, and even the body have been changed to become make the vehicle more dynamic. The six-speed automatic has been tuned to be more responsive, Mazda has updated the dampers, and the frame has received stiffening for reduced road noise and better ride comfort. Changes to the seats are said to make the position more "natural" and comfortable.
Lastly, AWD is now standard on all CX-5 models. Previously it was optional on GX and GS models, with front-drive being the default.
The automaker did not announce when the 2022 Mazda CX-5 would arrive, nor did it announce pricing, though with the addition of all-wheel drive, it can be expected to climb from the current starting price of $28,950.
