Preview: 2018 Mercedes-Maybach S650 Cabriolet

Los Angeles, CA – The first convertible model from Mercedes’ super-luxury division is scheduled to go on sale in the Spring of 2017, but get your order in now: with only 300 of the V12-powered, four-passenger Mercedes-Maybach S650 soft-top Cabriolets slated to be produced for world markets, it could quickly become a collector’s item – even with a jaw-dropping European suggested retail price of €300,000 – roughly $432,964 CAD at time of writing.

Based on the current Mercedes-Benz S-Class Cabriolet, the rear-wheel-drive Mercedes-Maybach S650 is fitted out with Mercedes’ 630 hp 6.0L V12 engine, seven-speed 7G-Tronic automatic transmission and AirMatic suspension. Estimated time from 0 to 100 km/h is just 4.1 seconds.

For that €300,000 price tag, the Mercedes-Maybach S650 Cabriolet comes with all of the standard and optional features of the S-Class Cabriolet including AIRCAP wind deflector and AIRSCARF neck heater.

Differentiating Mercedes-Maybach styling features include a new front bumper with a special lower section, additional chrome trim, Maybach badges on the front fenders, and 20-inch Maybach forged alloy wheels with a bi-chromatic finish.

The cabin features a full leather interior that borrows some ideas from the Concept S-Class Coupe concept vehicle including “waterfall” seat designs, diamond-quilted seat side bolsters, and “Budapest” piping. Exclusive to the Mercedes-Maybach S 650 is “designo nut brown magnolia” trim but owners can choose from nine additional interior colour combinations.

Exclusive interior details include Mercedes-Maybach embroidered logos on the front seats, embossed logos on the head restraints and in the centre console, deep-pile floor mats, Maybach lettering on the steering wheel, and chrome-plated “1 of 300” letters on the cupholder.

In addition, S650 Cabriolet owners receive a custom luggage set made of leather that matches the car’s interior. Owners also get a fabric car cover that matches the soft-top colour with diamond quilting and embroidered Maybach emblem and a key ring made of the same Nappa leather used in the interior.

According to a Mercedes-Benz Canada spokesperson, a small number of S650 Cabriolets will be available in Canada in mid to late summer 2017.  Canadian pricing has not yet been determined, but unless the exchange rate shifts significantly in our favour, it will likely cut a figure north of $430,000 – before taxes.
