Honda's back in the hatch game with a prototype five-door version of the 10th-generation Civic, revealed yesterday at the Geneva auto show. Ostensibly designed primarily to satisfy Europe's appetite for a small hatchback's added practicality, we know the car is coming here thanks to a press release teasing the car's North American reveal later this month in New York.
Though the car shown in Geneva (and that will be shown in NYC) is a prototype, it clearly follows Honda's recent trend of revealing prototypes barely different from the production models to come. That said, don't get too excited over the slotted brake rotors or centre-exit exhaust, though we hope those items could predict a future Type R hatch.
The European press release talks up a trio of engine choices that will be available over there, though we suspect the 1.5L turbo four-cylinder listed (the same one available in the sedan) is the only one of those we'll get; the other two are a diesel and a 1.0L turbo gas burner. Our other suspicion is that the turbo four will be the only motor offered in our version of this car, at least to begin with.
Honda says its Swindon, UK factory will build the Civic hatch for global consumption, leaving the company's Alliston, Ontario plant to continue cranking out as many 2016 Civic sedans as the masses desire.
