The Porsche 718 Cayman will arrive at dealerships in November with a starting price of $61,500

Porsche has begun taking orders for the latest generation of its four-cylinder mid-engined coupe, the 718 Cayman. Based, as always, on the Boxster roadster, the 718 Cayman shares that droptop's new engines, which are a 2.0L making 300 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque in the base model, while the 718 Cayman S gets a 2.5L mill good for 350 hp and 309 lb-ft.

Porsche says the 718 Cayman S uses the same variable turbine geometry as the 911 Turbo, but for the first time incorporates a turbo waste gate with that technology.

Chassis-wise, Porsche's engineers have firmed up the Cayman's suspension and retuned the car's shock absorbers and steering for more "agility and driving fun." Rear wheels a half-inch wider promise better lateral grip and corner stability. An optional Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) system drops the base model's ride height by 10 mm and the Cayman S' by 20 mm.

What speeds up must slow down, and to account for the cars' extra power, the new base Cayman gets the brake setup from the former Cayman S while the S now has six-piston calipers borrowed from the 911 Carrera and grabbing rotors six mm thicker than before.

Stylistically, the 718 Cayman's nose has a sharper profile that Porsche says makes the car look wider and "more masculine," and out back a similar effect is achieved by a high-gloss black strip between the taillights. Bi-xenon headlights are standard, and LEDs are an option.

Inside, the 718 Cayman gets the same treatment as its Boxster sibling, including a steering wheel that apes the one in the 918 Spyder, and Porsche Communication Management (PCM) and a 150-watt stereo are standard kit.

Pricing starts at $61,500 for the 718 Cayman, and $75,600 for the Cayman S. The first cars are due to roll into Canadian showrooms in November.
