Polestar, Volvo's performance arm, is turning from their signature blue to something a little more green. The company known for putting bigger turbos on Volvos and adding serious shock absorbers is now going to be making their own high-performance electrified cars.
The announcement came today from Volvo. Senior VP of Design Thomas Ingenlath will be the CEO of the revamped Polestar. Volvo said that race car company turned in-house performance arm Polestar will "become a new separately-branded electrified global high-performance car company."
Volvo CEO Håkan Samuelsson said that "Thomas heading up the Polestar organisation shows our commitment to establishing a truly differentiated stand-alone brand within the Volvo Car Group." So Polestar is going to be its own thing, making its own line of electrified performance cars, but still under Volvo's (and therefore Geely's) corporate umbrella.
The new cars will still share "technological and engineering synergies," but the new company will be making its own models. Ingenlath said he will be "developing a fabulous portfolio of bespoke products."
It's not clear if by "electrified" that they mean full EV or a combination of EVs and hybrids. The company said that more announcements about the products and plans will follow this fall.
