Mercedes-AMG Will Make a 400+ Horsepower A 45

Mercedes-AMG says the next generation of its subcompact A 45 hot hatch will boast more than 400 horsepower from a 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder engine.

That's the word from Mercedes-AMG boss Tobias Moers, who spoke to Australia's CarAdvice at the Geneva auto show. It was there he told a group of Oz journalists that the next-generation A 45 would be a "benchmark in (the subcompact) segment," partly thanks to a new version of the brand's 2.0L turbo four-cylinder that would crank out more than 400 hp.

The A 45 will be part of an AMG-tuned A-Class family that will also include a less-potent A 35 variant similar in execution to AMG models wearing the 43 designation. In AMG parlance, those lesser variants split the different between the all-out AMG cars and Benz's standard offerings.

Right now, the most powerful version of the Benz turbo 2.0L is found in the AMG versions of the CLA- and GLA-Class models, where it makes 375 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque.

The 2019 Mercedes-Benz A-Class is expected to arrive in Canada later this year.
