The plug-in Porsche 911 is on the way, according to the company's CEO, and it will be the most powerful 911 ever.
Porsche CEO Oliver Blume revealed the plug-in 911 early last year in an interview. At the time, he hinted that it could arrive as early as this year, but little else. Now, Blume is giving out some more information about the charged-up 911.
"The 911 plug-in must be a very strong performing car," Blume told Autocar. "It will be the most powerful 911 we’ve ever had; 700bhp might be possible."
That 700 hp figure is 20 more than the Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid makes from a V8 engine and its 136 hp electric motor. Blume said that the gas engine will be a turbocharged flat-six, since this is a 911 we're talking about. Add 136 to the 572 hp of the Turbo S and you get 708 hp. Has a nice ring to it. The Panamera uses a 14.1-kWh lithium-ion battery, although the smaller 911 may not have room for such a large pack.
The electric 911 won't arrive later this year though. Blume said that it would be launched "a couple of years" after the next-generation 911 arrives. That car is expected to be revealed at the Paris show later this year.
