Cadillac is beginning to paint a picture of what its future model lineup will look like with the confirmation of a subcompact sedan smaller than the current ATS.
According to GM Authority, Cadillac boss Johan de Nysschen says the new baby Caddy will replace the 2018 Cadillac ATS as the brand's entry-level car model, probably (we think) wearing a CT4 badge. That would fit its sub-CTS (soon to be rebranded CT5) placement and line up with the forthcoming XT4 compact crossover, which will slot in below the existing XT5.
The new entry-level model will help GM's luxury brand inject more diversity into its sedan range. Right now, the ATS and 2018 Cadillac CTS both sport cabins that are small for their respective classes.
De Nysschen added that the new compact will start out with RWD as a nod to the BMW 2 Series, which will be among the CT4's closest competitors. He also called out a high-po V-spec model that he predicts will lap Germany's Nurburgring racetrack faster than any of its competition.
Earlier this week, it was rumoured that Cadillac will also begin selling a production version of its upscale Escala sedan concept in late 2021. Expect the new small sedan to arrive well before that – probably as a 2020 model.
