Hyundai has pulled the covers off the Kona Electric compact crossover at the Vancouver auto show, where it revealed its newest EV will boast 400 km of driving range.
That estimated figure vaults the Kona to the front of the entry-level EV class in Canada, ahead of the previous EV range leader, the Chevrolet Bolt. It also becomes Hyundai's most impressive electrified model, handily outstripping the roughly 200-km range of the Ioniq EV compact hatchback.
When the Kona Electric goes on sale near the end of this year, it will feature an electric motor good for 201 hp and 291 lb-ft of torque that will be fed by a 64 kWh battery pack. Hyundai says that battery will accept 80 percent of a full charge in as little as 55 minutes when connected to a Level III charger, or about 10 hours using the more common Level II charging standard.
Standard features will include the expected Apple CarPlay/Android Auto smartphone integration and the Hyundai Smart Sense active safety suite of forward collision warning, lane keeping assist, blind spot warning, rear cross traffic assist and automatic high beams.
Options will include navigation, head-up display, rain-sensing wipers, wireless smartphone charging and a gray-and-blue leather interior.
In Canada, the Kona Electric will also come with a heat pump to improve the car's winter cabin heating capability. This uses a traditional air conditioning cycle but in reverse, and also draws heat from the electric motor and current inverter to warm the interior.
Pricing will be announced closer to the car's on-sale date in the fourth quarter of 2018.
