The 2018 Canadian Green Car Award winner has just been revealed at the Green Living Show in Toronto. The award goes to the 2018 Chevrolet Bolt EV, reclaiming its crown from last year.
This is the sixth year for the Canadian Green Car Award, which was the country's first environmentally-focused automotive award. The list of judges includes 14 leading automotive journalists from across Canada.
"This is Chevrolet's third year in a row winning the overall Canadian Green Car award, first with the Volt, and now twice with the all-electric Bolt," said award steering committee organizer and autoTRADER.ca managing editor Michael Bettencourt. "When you look at overall electric range per dollar, and the fact that you don't have to live in the three rebate provinces to get either Chevrolet plug-in, GM Canada's commitment to green cars overall is very impressive."
There are four categories for the award, with finalists named in the Full Battery Electric category, Plug-in Hybrid Electric, Traditional Hybrid Electric, and for Efficient Internal Combustion. In each category, judges combine objective scores for fuel economy, emissions, and price along with subjective impressions of performance, driving experience, value, features, and green qualities.
The class winners, in order, were the Chevrolet Bolt, Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid, Hyundai Ioniq hybrid, and Honda Civic.
"This year our judging panel was struck by how mainstream green cars have become," said Award Co-creator Eric Novak. "The four finalists have demonstrated that by owning a vehicle with minimal environmental impact, one doesn’t need to feel they are making sacrifices in other areas. Seeing green cars as normal instead of alternative is critical to achieve wide-spread acceptance among car buyers and our finalists this year go a long way towards proving that."
The winning Chevrolet Bolt EV offers a 383 km electric range, and seating for five in a conventional small hatchback body. It's the third win in a row for Chevrolet, with the Volt winning in 2015.
