There's a Hot Wheels Movie Coming to the Big Screen

Movies made after toys and games are nothing new. In fact, they’re becoming more successful. Look at the Transformers series, or more notably the Lego movie series, where the fourth one is coming out February 7. The next toy-inspired blockbuster could be a Hot Wheels movie, with Mattel and Warner Brothers teaming up.

"We are excited to bring the thrill of a Hot Wheels live-action feature film to the big screen in partnership with Warner Bros. Pictures,” Ynon Kreiz, Mattel’s chairman and CEO, told Variety.

It's the second partnership for the two, with a Barbie film already announced.

There aren't many details yet. It's too early for any cast, director, or even writing credits. But they have said that this will be a live-action movie. Which raises some interesting possibilities. Is it going to be about playing with the toys, are they going to come to life, or will it be a creation we haven't even thought up yet?

Hot Wheels cars have been the inspiration of likely millions of automotive enthusiasts both young and old since 1968. The company says it sells more than 500 million cars a year. Showing no signs of slowing down, the ubiquitous small cars and orange track pieces have already hit the video game console with 2017's Forza Horizon 4 Hot Wheels expansion pack. Automakers have even made full-size recreations of Hot Wheels originals and tributes like the Hot Wheels special edition Camaro that came out for 2018.

So when can we expect it? The movie is likely at least a couple of years out. Modern movie making takes time. Especially this early in the process. In the meantime, if they want help with the audio department we'll be in the other room working on our revving engine sound effects and screeching tires on our desks.
