Toyota today rolled out updated versions of its Tacoma mid-size pickup and Sequoia full-size utility for the 2020 model year at the Chicago auto show.
Tacoma’s changes constitute a mid-cycle refresh on a design introduced in 2016 to bring a welcome boost in tech content. Toyota says all trims now come with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Amazon Alexa, while most trims gain a standard power driver’s seat. There’s also a newly available 8.0-inch infotainment touchscreen, an optional panoramic view monitor, multi-terrain monitor updated wheels and exterior lighting designs.
Notable among those new features is the multi-terrain monitor, which uses exterior cameras to provide a view of the ground around and under the truck in off-road situations. It’s standard in TRD Off-Road trim. Limited models get the panoramic view camera to aid visibility while reversing and in tight parking situations.
Tacoma powertrains are carried over. The base engine is a 2.7 L four-cylinder (159 hp/180 lb-ft) and the upgrade is a 3.5L V6 with 278 hp and 265 lb-ft. Both come standard with a six-speed automatic transmission, while the V6 is optional with a six-speed stick.
The first-ever Sequoia TRD Pro is kitted out not unlike the Tundra pickup. It gains Fox off-road shocks and trim-specific springs with better off-road compliance. Other changes include a bolder grille, exclusive army green paint, skid plate and a roof rack.
Sequoia TRD Pro also gets passive keyless entry, power driver’s seat, three-zone climate controls, a 7.0-inch touchscreen and Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone platform capability. TRD Pro adds blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert to the Sequoia’s standard Safety Sense P suite.
The new trim shares its 5.7L V8 (381 hp/401 lb-ft), six-speed transmission and 4WD with the rest of the Sequoia range.
Toyota has not announced pricing or on-sale dates for the two updated models.
