Toyota Canada today announced that its Cambridge, Ontario, factory will produce the Lexus NX compact luxury crossover starting in 2022, which will mark the first time it has produced that model outside of Japan.
The Cambridge NX assembly line will supply gasoline and hybrid versions of the SUV to Lexus dealers across North America.
The NX was Lexus's second-best-selling vehicle in Canada last year, after the mid-size RX crossover; 2018 was also the NX's best sales year in Canada with more than 7,800 new models sold.
Today's announcement did not include the addition of any new jobs. At the moment, Toyota employs more than 8,500 people to build the Toyota Corolla and RAV4 and Lexus RX at its Cambridge and Woodstock, Ontario, plants. Later this year the Corolla assembly line will move to Mexico, and Toyota has not revealed whether that will result in job losses.
Today's announcement comes in the wake of auto assembly job cuts by General Motors and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles. About 2,500 General Motors employees will be out of work later this year when that company closes its Oshawa factory. Another 1,500 Fiat Chrysler Automobiles workers will lose their jobs in September when the company cuts a shift at its Windsor minivan plant.
